Trump’s attention span is notoriously short. He can’t seem to focus on any one topic long enough to do anything more than stir up scandal before moving on to something else and creating new problems.

Last week saw him attacking black NFL athletes, then pivoting to insult the mayor of San Juan, who is struggling to save her people from the damage inflicted by Hurricane Maria despite Trump’s failure to provide adequate relief. Now, the president has moved on from Puerto Rico to North Korea.

This morning, Trump hopped on Twitter to once again push the doomsday clock closer to midnight by implying that diplomacy is of no interest to him, and that war with North Korea is inevitable. He publicly undermined his Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, who has been ostensibly searching for a peaceful solution to the escalating issue.

His use of the moniker “Little Rocket Man” once again shows that he is not taking the situation seriously enough. Presumably, he is doing it to try to intimidate and emasculate Kim Jong-Un, but all it really does is make Trump look foolish to the rest of the world. A president should choose his words carefully, and infuse them with the gravitas of his office.

He’s like a child playing with matches, except in this case the matches could wipe out millions of innocent people in a nuclear holocaust. Outright war with North Korea would not only lead to the annihilation of countless North Koreans suffering under their brutal totalitarian government, but South Korea and Japan would also be pulled into the conflict, doing untold damage to their populaces and infrastructure. Diplomacy is the only option.

Trump is putting lives in danger once again, just so that he can steer the public narrative away from his botching of the Puerto Rico crisis. He is clearly unfit to lead.
