During a traffic stop on Saturday two Vallejo, California officers were captured on video drawing their weapons and pointing them at two men inside a white pickup truck who appear to be complying and have their hands outside the vehicle in plain sight. According to a witness whoever, one officer used a racial slur during the altercation and threatened to “blow them away”- in fear of how the situation could escalate, a neighbor began filming. The officer has since been suspended and on paid administrative leave pending an investigation.
As reported by The Grio:
Leo Bruno, who recorded the traffic stop from his house, told CBS News that he heard the office use the N-word, and he recorded the incident as the officers handcuffed and then searched the two men because he feared that it would lead to a police shooting.
“All the fatal shootings over the past year, like Philando Castile, Michael Brown and Trayvon Martin,” he explained. “We were worried it was going to happen again right on our doorstep.”
The Vallejo Police Department is now investigating Bruno’s claims, and the officer in question is on paid administrative leave.
“The Vallejo Police takes all reports of unprofessional behavior seriously and has no tolerance for such behavior,” the department said in a statement.
What do you think the outcome of this will be as there have rarely been any repercussions for officers abusing their power as of late. It is scary to know that this is how officers conduct themselves when they do not know they are being surveilled. Even with this concrete evidence, do you think there will be real consequences for the offending officer? Let us know what you think in the comments below.
