According to a new Pew poll, the majority of Republicans and Republican-leaning people believe that higher education is bad for America. That number has drastically increased in the last year as can be be seen in the graph below.
58% of Republicans say colleges have a negative effect on the nation, according to the survey, which also polled respondents on institutions like churches, banks, the media and labor unions. 36%t of GOP survey participants say colleges are having a positive impact on the U.S. reported Raw Story.
By contrast, the poll found that 72% Democrats and left-leaning independents view higher education favorably — a number that has not changed much in recent years.
Overall, 55% of those polled say they hold a positive view of colleges.
The poll also showed wide partisan gaps in views of other institutions. 73% of Republicans have a positive view of the impact of churches and other religious institutions, compared to 50% of Democrats; 44% of Democrats think the media is good for the country, versus just 10% of Republicans.
