The newest version of the Republican health care bill exempts Congress members, their families, and their staff from the most unpopular, and life-threatening, provisions, but they don’t seem to care about protecting others, especially the poor.
The bill would allow states to repeal some provisions of the Affordable Care Act, such as protections covering people with pre-existing medical conditions and requiring insurance companies to pay for prescription drugs and mental health treatment reported The Hill.
But a GOP amendment would maintain those protections for members of Congress and their own families and staff members.
Democrats quickly called out the selfish hypocrisy, arguing that Republicans are willing to take away protections for the general public, but not themselves.
“The best evidence yet that the new GOP repeal plan is a disaster for people’s health care is that the GOP exempted members of Congress from living under it,” said Leslie Dach, director of the Protect Our Care Campaign, one of the main groups fighting repeal.
Some Republicans still remain opposed to the current plan, and a Washington Post/ABC News found 70 percent of Americans want protections for pre-existing conditions to apply nationwide.
If the government is actually “of the people, by the people, for the people”, then it seems like the people should be listened to. We cannot allow Trumpcare to be approved like this. It is so bad that even Congress exempted themselves from it. Let this be a wake up call for anyone that thinks these people are actually out for the best interests of Americans.
