Instead of being beside his wife as she gave birth, James Reiner spent what was supposed to be one of the happiest moments of his life behind bars. For the seemingly innocent act of speeding to get his wife Dana to the hospital in a timely manner while in labor, James was met by a police officer who in a huge abuse of power, and not wanting to hear any explanation simply exclaimed to the panicked couple: ” I will shoot you, you [expletive]” and threatened James with a taser. Dana begged to be let go while screaming in pain, and James tried to reason with the officer but later found himself arrested- it was not until fifteen minutes later that the officer sought medical help for Dana, and an excruciating 20 minutes after that help finally arrived.
As reported by Shareably:
When the sirens of the police car went on, the woman called 911 to explain the situation and ask for assistance. The operator on the other line told her that it’d be best to stop the car and explain the situation to the police officers.
Unfortunately, the police officers didn’t want to hear any of it. They brutally asked her husband James Reiner to lay on the ground and when he tried to explain his actions and tell them that their wife was pregnant, they simply didn’t care. They even treated him as a dangerous criminal. “I will shoot you,you [expletive]”.
When he asked the cops to stand up and look after his screaming wife, they shouted to stay on the floor. The officers were clearly taking their time with the situation and were even taunting the man. Fifteen minutes later, they finally call an ambulance for Dana. “Now you’re going to be in jail when your kid gets born”, one of the agents said.
As if that wasn’t enough, one of the police agents even threatens to use a taser on the man. When he asked his colleague if the man had already been tased, he responded with “Well, it’s not too late yet.”
Twenty minutes later, an ambulance arrived and helped Dana give birth to a healthy baby girl. As for James, he was arrested and charged with ‘invading an officer’.
James was in jail when their baby boy was born, but both of them said that the most important thing was that the baby was healthy.
In an era where fortunately almost everything is recorded, dashcam footage of the incident surfaced and backed up the Reiner’s explanation of events. When taken to court, the matter was ruled in their favor having reached an undisclosed settlement with the officers in question.
What do you make of the whole situation, what should be the consequences that the involved officers should be meant to face? Should there be exceptions to breaking the law if it is a matter of health and saefty, was it a gross abuse of power on law enforcement’s part, or where they just uphold the laws on the books?
