Teen Thought White Privilege Could Save Him in Court ‘All I have to do is cry’ *VIDEO*

Courts, Crime, News

The rate of incarceration if White individuals versus that compared to people of color is startling. Black Americans are five times more likely to be incarcerated when compared to their White counterparts. With this information, sometimes White folks can get ahead of themselves thinking they are above the law, and that was the case with Dylan Schumaker, a 17-year-old white male from Buffalo, New York who thought that by simply by shedding crocodile tears and being a young white male would allow him to get off early fo the  beating his girlfriend’s 23-month-old son to death.

As reported on BET:

Schumaker was convicted of the second-degree murder last month and appeared in court for sentencing. He had his sad face ready and his privilege in tact when State Supreme Court Justice M. William Boller was ready to hand down punishment, except one thing was unexpectedly standing in his way: his own words.

“State Supreme Court Justice M. William Boller wasn’t about to let him get away with it, though, and when Schumaker appeared for sentencing , she called him “a manipulator and deceiver” and read his own words back to him.”

“I’m a 16-year-old blond,” Boller read to Schumaker in a now-viral video. “Probably all I have to do is cry, and they’re going to feel sorry for me,” Schumaker told her, referring to the jury.”

Boller also called Schumaker “a manipulator and deceiver” and believed that he was old enough to understand right from wrong.

It is clear that Schumaker knew right from wrong- he obviously had the clarity of mind to conspire to use his White privilege to let him off this heinous crime, which backfired in the worst way for this young man. Until systemic racism isn’t used to convict people of color at a rate exponentially higher than that of White individuals, people like Schumaker will continue to believe their skin color will allow them to commit crimes with a certain level of impunity.
