Public Education Doomed: Pence Breaks Tie to Confirm Betsy DeVos

Education, Government, News

Betsy DeVos, the woman who has no connection to or experience running public schools, was confirmed Tuesday as U.S. Education Secretary by the U.S. Senate.

The vote was a 50-50 split after two Republican senators—Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska—voted with their heads (and probably made themselves Trump’s enemy) rather than their political party. Beyond noting the lack of experience, the 2 republicans both noted the flood of messages they received telling them not to vote for DeVos.

The Michigan billionaire has never attended public schools (neither have her children) or taken out a student loan, and she has recently been pushing hard for privately run charter schools.

Vice President Mike Pence had to be the tie breaking vote due to the deadlock.

The New York Times reported this was the first time in history that the vice president was called to Congress to cast the deciding vote for a president’s Cabinet pick.

While DeVos has absolutely no qualifications to hold the position and bombed during her confirmation hearing, she was a large donor to Trump’s campaign and is a personal friend of the president, reported The Root.

She also believes that teachers should be allowed to carry guns in class to protect everyone from bear attacks.

Many children will undoubtedly suffer from having DeVos as the Education Secretary. This will put even more strain on an already struggling educational system.
