This morning, 140 Israeli settlers stormed the courtyards of the Aqsa mosque. Israeli police soon followed, at first seeming to protect some of the extremist settlers, but then after assessing the situation, arresting the illegal right wing provocateurs.
One of the Orthodox Jewish hardliners threw himself to the ground as police surrounded him, screaming “why the mosque has not been demolished yet?”
Earlier today, we reported on the massively-successful 60-day crowdfunding effort for the building of a Third Temple on this very site which had left many Palestinians concerned that right-wing settlers are making a move to illegally seize the site of the Dome of the Rock and Masjid al-Aqsa.
To make matters worse, because of all of the settler provocations, additional restrictions have been placed upon the worshippers who regularly attend the mosque.
Only last Sunday, the Al-Aqsa was attacked by hardliners, and Israel instituted new bans on worshipper access to the mosque. The assault on Sunday resulted in Israeli soldiers injuring 15 worshippers at the third holiest site in Islam.
